Welcome to the Louisiana Standards Review

The 2016-2017 Louisiana Science Standards review process, established by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), empowers 83 educators and experts nominated by school districts, professional associations, and advocacy organizations to review and develop science expectations for Louisiana students that will prepare them for a successful transition to college and career.

The standards review process will focus on science and will involve two phases: (1) a professional review process by committees of Louisiana educators, content experts, postsecondary education leaders, business and industry leaders, and parents, and (2) an online review that allows Louisiana educators, parents of school children and other citizens to review the draft standards and submit comments. This review process puts trust in those individuals closest to students to make decisions on the knowledge and skills students in Louisiana should learn to be successful in college and a career.

To ensure your feedback is shared at the standards review workgroup meeting on January 12-13, please submit your comments by January 6. At the conclusion of the standards review process, the Standards Committee will propose a set of updated standards to the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education by March 2017.

Please review the following document to familiarize yourself with the framework of the proposed science standards:

Instructions

The standards are arranged by and grade level. To review a standard, click the plus sign beside the standard to see more detailed information. You may provide feedback on standards by clicking the Icon: Provide feedback for this standard icon.

In your evaluation of each standard, you will have the opportunity to review every component of the standard: Performance Expectation (PE) and Clarification Statement, Science and Engineering Practice (SEP), Disciplinary Core Idea(s) (DCI), and Crosscutting Concept (CC). You will have the following options for every component:

  1. I agree with the component as written. (comments are optional)
  2. The component should be in a different grade level. (grade selection is required)
  3. The component should be rewritten. (suggested rewrite is required)
  4. Delete this component. (comments are required)

To find particular standards to review, you may also search for a particular concept in the search bar.

If you believe a new standard needs to be created, please click "Suggest a New Standard" in the footer of each page in the portal to submit an email with your suggestion.

You may leave and come back to the Louisiana Standards Review Portal at any time, but you will only be able to submit suggestions on a particular standard once per electronic device.

The Louisiana Student Standards for Science review process, initiated by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) in June 2016, allowed Louisiana educators, parents and citizens to review the draft standards and submit comments through an online portal. The online portal was open December 1, 2016 to January 6, 2017. That portal is now closed. All public comment collected during that public comment period will be posted on the Louisiana Department of Education website and shared with the science standards committee members on January 11, 2017.

The Louisiana Student Standards for Science will be considered at the March 2017, BESE meeting.
